TUESDAY (Week 7)

Fartleck Session. I know this sounds very rude, but it is the name given to a type of interval training that provides excellent endurance and strength exercise, as well as helping to improve speed. You don't need to run over a specifically measured route, it is a case of altering running speeds over varying distances - Example: Jog to warm up, then pick a landmark (e.g. the next lamp post) and run at a predetermined speed (e.g. 70% of maximum pace) until you reach it. Once there, slow back down to a jog until you have recovered, then do the same again at a different pre-determined speed (e.g. 90%), and so on. The benefit to such training is that you are not racing against the clock or running a certain distance. You are the deciding factor in how hard or easy the run is and adds a good element of variety to the training schedule.

Today was 6 x 45 Seconds Fast, with a 3 minute jog in between.
